Stellenrust is one of the largest family-owned wine estates in South-Africa. They started their estate in 1928 and expended over the years. Nowadays, they have almost 400 hectares of land spread out over the 'Golden triangle' & Bottelary Hills. This sub-region is not only known because of its impressive landscape, but it is also the residence of the most famous wine producers of the country. The wine maker Tertius Boshoff highly values a fair-trade product. In 2005, they decided to give a little back to their 70 employees & gave them a permanent contract and empowered them on 100 hectares of their land, as main shareholders. Vinification & Maturing of the Wine
The grapes are harvested from 5 till 20 years old bush vines, located high on the Bottelary Hills. The blend is created as the sandy soil caused a faster ripening of the grapes due to the higher temperature in the vineyards. The Sauvignon (cooler vineyards) is blended with the Chenin Blanc to create fresh acidity in the wine. After the harvest, the grapes are moved to the clear. Here, the grape juice allowed some skin contact with the grapes. It is cold fermented in stainless steel tanks for about 3 weeks & left on its fermentation lees for about 3 months.
Tasting Notes
In the nose, the wine expresses guava, white peach & pear. On the palate, the wine shows notes of ripe tropical fruit, herbs & a lingering aftertaste of grapefruit. A lovely, fresh level of acidity.
Recommendation
We recommend to serve this wine at a temperature between 8 & 10 degrees. A great aperitif or a perfect serve with spicy chicken or fresh summer salads.
