Angel de Larrainzar - Tinto - 2017 [Ayegui, Spain].
150 years ago, the Larrainzar family acquired an extraordinary estate in Ayegui, close to the Irache monastery, at the foot of the Montejurra Mountain & next to the Camino Santiago. The great-grandfather & founder, Luis Larrainzar, started a small vineyard with Tempranillo grapes & winery with a really small production. In 1929, the great-grandfather got awarded with a golden medal in the wine competition held in connection with the World Exposition in Barcelona.
Nowadays, the beautiful single estate vineyard still belongs to the same family. They offer two limited lines; Pago de Larrainzar & Angel de Larrainzar. These lines are both based on quality & taste of the grapes. But mainly created in honour of the great grandfather of the family.
With this line, the winery honours the 10th harvest. The wine presents the tradition, quality & elegance of the traditional family production. When you taste this amazing wine, you will discover the terroir of Ayegui as it emphasises on the freshness & boldness of the fruit, aged for a short time in oak.
At the winery, each wine making process is handled with detail & care. They have 13 modern stainless steel tanks of different sizes. In here, the grapes ferment & macerate separately, according to the varieties & plots of origin. This in order to create the best wines possible. After the fermentation, the wine matured for 3 months in French oak barrels.
Tasting Notes
The wine shows an attractive cherry red colour, which reveals its youth. It shows an intense aroma of red fruit (blackberries & raspberries) & pleasant notes of oak, hints of cacao & caramel. In the mouth, the wine is fresh, robust & powerful. It leaves a nice & sweet aftertaste, tempting you to take a second sip.
